Horses Shell Shock and Epidemic Jockies Sam Lettngton riding Shell Shock (Shelly) and Sandra Crow riding Epidemic (Virus) Purpose Their first workouts and letting the jockies get use their new horses while also letting Sandra and Virus figure out how to compromise with their sight problems
Breaking news! It's official! Sam has lost her mind. (It was last seen with a man in a baseball cap heading towards a cornfield in a white van. If you've seen this van, please call our help line at 555-Kill-me-now or 555-Sandra-SOS.)
I mean seriously. Who's bright idea was it to put a half blind girl on a half blind horse? What did she think we would even this up and see for each other like they do in the movies? Did it ever occur to her that it would probably just do the opposite due to the fact that: This horse didn't like me. I swear Virus gave me the 'evil eye' (and a darn good one at that!) when I went to go get her this morning. She didn't even take the treat I offered her! She gave me some look and shoved the treat out of my hand!
Such an ungratefully little...
A squeal came from Sam's direction, pulling me out of my mental rant. The filly under Sam was something else. With her ears pinned into her messy gray mane, her mouth foaming and chomping at the bit, her eyes rimmed slightly with anticipation, and her back rising as she kicked out in frustration, Shelly looked like the devil himself.
Which brought to mind another reason why I believe my boss has lost her mind. She decided to ride with the blind pair on her angry-at-the-world, probably-would-buck-you-of-to-kick-you-in-the-face filly. I have the feeling either Virus or I was going to get kicked today.
We are so gonna get kicked today... I mumbled to Virus under me. It was like talking to a brick wall. Her ears continued to swivel, not even acknowledging my words. Look, ya' unfeeling, evil, bi-
If you are trying to get something out of her. Sam kept her distance with her dancing filly. Don't bother. She'll be more interested in a fly then any human. She's always been like that. She turned her filly, and I saw her arms flex to keep Shelly from attempting to go. Let's hurry up, she mumbled, letting her filly have a bit of a release on her bit. She immediately flew into a trot. My arms are getting tired, I heard her finish, though I was sure she didn't expect me to hear it.
Being blind in one eye does have it's perks.
I nudged my own filly into a jog after the feisty filly. When Shelly sped up at the sight of Virus catching up, she snorted loudly and sped up. Virus, to my surprise, pinned her ears and lengthened her stride, easily catching up to Shelly who was being held back by Sam.
Wiggling the bit as we came side by side with the graying filly, Virus slowed and trotted next to her. Though her ears were laid back to show her I don't play games mood.
Fifteen minutes slowly passed by and soon we allowed our hyped up fillies to pick up a smooth canter, but Sam was struggling with Shelly. She leaned heavily on the bit, chomping and slobbering as she tried her best to get the better of Sam and be able to gallop freely.
Hey! Sam chirped from the right of me. I had allowed Virus to slowly make her way to the rail where she was most comfortable. I turned my head slightly towards her but I still couldn't see her. Easy gallop down the back stretch and sprint at the stretch. Nice and easy for the gallop though, she said over the pounding hooves. My sensitive ears easily caught her words. I nodded in response as we easily cantered around the backstretch.
For a furlong, we cantered down the backstretch then Shelly was unleashed a bit. Her strides increased as she sped up and took off at a gallop.
Virus quickly responded to my hands as I urged her to follow the filly though she was perfectly content with staying behind the gray filly and showed no urgency to pass Shelly just yet.
It didn't take long for the corner to come upon us. A sudden change came from Virus. Her strides grew wider and she started to bulldoze her way forwards. All the frustration from the lost races seemed to boil from her and her sudden determination took me by surprise.
I barely had to ask for anything by the time we hit the stretch. Virus was on Shelly's heels and gaining fast. I had to turn my head sideways to get a look at Shelly. The gray filly was slowly starting to pick up speed but Virus was nearly even with her.
Finally, Shelly picked up speed as Virus came head to head with her. The wire flew over us before the dueling fillies could finish their fight.
